The Atomic Mac is a shareware Periodic Table of the Elements for the Macintosh. The registration fee is only $25. Until you register, you will only be able to look at data for a few selected elements.
Instructions:
When you first launch The Atomic Mac, you see a normal presentation of the periodic table of the elements. Clicking on one of the elements brings up a small window that contains detailed information about that element. There are five different sets of detailed information you can display, selected from the Info menu. They are:
Physical - a list of physical properties, such as density, melting point, etc.
Isotopes - a list of all isotopes for this element, showing the atomic mass, decay mode, half life, and percent natural abundance. If there are too many isotopes to fit in the window, then a small page flip (corner) appears in the lower right hand corner of the window, to select which page to view. Clicking on an isotope will automatically jump to that daughter product, making it easy to trace a radioactive element down to it's final stable isotope. Holding down the shift key while clicking will display the entire path to stabilty.
Shells - a graphical display of the atom, showing the electron shells, along with the electronic configuration.
X-Ray - a list of the K and L shell fluorescence energies, and K, L, and M shell binding energies.
Misc - General information showing the name of the discoverer of the element, and where and when it was discovered. Interesting bits of information are also displayed. If you have any other interesting facts about an element, let me know, and I'll be glad to add them to a future version.
You can also alter the periodic table display to shade each element, by several properties, which are:
Density
Heat of Vaporization
Heat of Fusion
Specific Heat
Thermal Conductivity
Linear Expansion Coefficient
Melting Point
Boiling Point
Atomic Radius
Covalent Radius
Magnetic Susceptability
Electrical Resistivity
Electron Affinity
Electric Dipole Polarizability
State (gas, liquid, solid)
Photoelectric Work Function
Electronegativity
Crystal Structure
These properties are selected under the View menu.
When viewing the state, you can change the temperature using the slider control. The selected temperature is displayed below, in degrees Kelvin, Centigrade, and Fahrenheit. You can also use the left and right arrow keys to decrease or increase the temperature in 1 degree K increments.
Also under the View menu is the Molecular Weight Calculator. Selecting this will display a text entry box just above the periodic table. You can enter a chemical formula into this box, and the molecular weight will be calculated for you. For example, entering H2O will compute the molecular weight of water. The text is case sensitive, so table salt must be entered as NaCl not NACL or nacl.
You can enter parenthesis in your formula, such as (H2O2)2
You can also enter in a hydrated compound using the • symbol (option 8 on your keyboard). An example: CuSO4•5H2O
Under the Window menu are two options Normal and Small, to select the size of the window. The small window is useful when you want to keep The Atomic Mac running and on the desktop, but out of the way.
Getting the latest copy of The Atomic Mac
You can always get the latest copy of The Atomic Mac from our web site, the URL is:
If you have Internet Config, you can launch your web browser and automatically go to this page by selecting Go To The Atomic Mac Website from under the Apple Menu.
How to register your copy of The Atomic Mac:
If you would like to register by sending cash, check or money order, you may send payment ($25 US) directly to me at the following address, along with your email address (very important, so I can email your license file to you):
Chris Smolinski
4708 Trail Court
Westminster, MD 21158
A site license is available for just $200, this allows you to run as many copies on as many computers as you would like, providing the computers are all at the same location (the same school or office building, for example). A world-wide site license is also available, to allows you to run The Atomic Mac on as many computers world-wide as you would like, provided they are all part of the same organization (the same school district or company, for example).
If you wish to pay by using a Purchase Order (PO), you may do so by sending your order to me at order@blackcatsystems.com. Please indicate the company name and address, PO number, and an email address. I will send the License file(s) to the indicated email address, and invoice the company. A $5 handling charge is applied to all purchase orders.
If you would like to pay by credit card, you may do so by using the Kagi Shareware service. If you use Kagi and a credit card, you can also register online. The web URL is:
Paying for The Atomic Mac using Kagi is fairly simple. Open the Register program that accompanies The Atomic Mac. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase. Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data to Kagi.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you may email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax machine, just fax the payment message to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are typically processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying by credit card, and wish to mail your payment, you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street PMB #392-SZ
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed. Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
Please make sure to include your email address, so I can send you the registered version of The Atomic Mac.
Thanks again for giving The Atomic Mac a try.
